Manchester United back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir featured as Turkey secured a famous win.
Turkish football is on the rise right now. Not only are Galatasaray impressing in the Champions League with a win away at Manchester United, but their national team is also trending upwards.
Turkey have qualified for Euro 2024, finishing above Croatia in their group, and at the weekend, secured an impressive friendly victory away at Germany.
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was a starter for Turkey on the night, getting some much-needed game time.
Altay Bayindir helps Turkey win
Altay Bayindir is Manchester United’s back-up after signing on transfer deadline day from Super Lig side Fenerbahce.
While he has impressed in training, the 25-year-old is still awaiting his debut, with Andre Onana an ever-present so far.
Last night against Germany he made two saves as the Turkish team enjoyed a memorable away victory against Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Bayindir wrote on Instagram: “We continue to play well. Congratulations to all my teammates for their hard effort. Also thanks to everyone who made us feel at home in Berlin!”
His performance was noted by his Manchester United teammates, with Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez both reaching out to congratulate him.
Former Fenerbahce teammate Mame Thiam also sent him a message which read: “The wall”.
Great timing for Bayindir
Andre Onana’s continued selection has meant Bayindir has not yet got a look in at Manchester United. So he has been in need of some game time.
He does not always start for Turkey, so this was a great opportunity for him in a high-profile game, and it was important he got some minutes under his belt.
Andre Onana is nursing an injury picked up with Cameroon, so Bayindir will need to be sharp if called upon.
He is also expected to go to the African Nations Cup for a month in January, and Bayindir will be competing with Tom Heaton for a spot.
