David de Gea has posted a cryptic tweet on social media following a report that manchester united could look to offer him a short-term deal at the club.
The sun claimed United were ‘planning an embarrassing U-turn by pleading with dumped keeper De Gea to return on a short-term deal.’ It was suggested that Erik ten Hag’s side was worried that they would be short of a worthy backup ‘keeper when Andre onana goes to the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year.
There is still uncertainty over whether onana could miss as many as nine matches early this year following Cameroon’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the goalkeeper free to make his own choice on whether he wants to represent his country at such a prestigious event.
Club sources initially dismissed the suggestion that United would offer De Gea another chance at the club after his high-profile exit over the summer.
The Spaniard has now added further fuel to the speculation with a cryptic post on social media that divided the United fanbase on Thursday lunchtime
De Gea simply posted a ‘thinking face’ emoji on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that polarised opinion from the United supporters who replied.
Some were seemingly in favour of De Gea getting a final chance at the club and the opportunity of a fitting farewell for his services, while others would rather he didn’t return.
The 32-year-old remains a free agent after he left United in the summer window following 12 years with the old trafford club.
