manchester united are reportedly ready to bring David De Gea  back to the club after replacing him with Andre Onana in the summer.

The Spaniard has not yet found a new home following the end of his time at Old Trafford after 12 premier league seasons with the club. The update comes following struggles for Onana, despite his heroics against Copenhagen in the champions league

United are set to be left short in the goalkeeping department should Onana join up with the Cameroon national team for the Africa Cup of Nations between January and February – which could lead to an embarrassing U-turn.

The former Atletico Madrid man remains a free agent and was back in Manchester of late to pick up belongings and watch the women’s team in action.

The 32-year-old has posted video clips of him staying fit by training alone since his departure, with his stance on a possible return uncertain.

De Gea is said to be have been offered a contract extension on reduced terms before it expired, which was later taken off the table.

Onana joined the club for an initial fee in the region of £43million but a series of high-profile errors have followed.

Erik ten Hag will hope that his last-minute penalty save against Copenhagen at Old Trafford will spark a change in fortunes.

He said after the 1-0 victory: “He showed personality.

“He knows the levels and what his skills are and he hadn’t matched his skills and could do better but it was a very good performance on Saturday and tonight. He is a very good penalty saver.”

Next up for United is the derby against manchester city  before the EFL Cup visit of Newcastle
