TV pundit Paul Merson reckons Manchester United are dangerous opponents for their treble-winning neighbours manchester city as they are such massive underdogs on derby day.
pep Guardiola and star-studded City won the lot last season and they have also made a strong start to their latest premier league title defence. They have picked up 21 points from a possible 27 so far this term and sit joint-second with Arsenal two points behind surprise early table-toppers Tottenham.
By contrast, United are loitering in eighth position on 15 points. Erik ten hag and his squad have been defeated six times across all competitions already this campaign.
However, with three straight wins now under their belt, United have picked up form at the right time as they gear up to welcome City to old Trafford on Sunday afternoon (3.30pm). But how does Premier League playmaker turned pundit Merson see that one going?
Writing in his latest Sky_sport column, Merson said: “If both teams play to their capability there’s only one winner. However, the game is at Old Trafford and it’s a derby, so United fans will stick with their team.
“It’s not a bad time for United to play City. United go into this game as the massive underdogs, but it does help in some ways because the fans will stick with them. They will know they are up against it against City and they’ll also know the players need their support through the whole game.”
Merson added: “They need to stick with them too. Their fans aren’t silly. They know there’s a gulf between the two teams at the moment. United are also not going into this game having reeled off six straight wins.
“There’s no real expectation on Erik ten Hag’s side. That makes them dangerous.”
