Report: Manchester City now want to sign 18-year-old Manchester United wonderkid, compared to Paul Pogba

In a stunning move, Manchester City now wants to sign Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United. That’s what FourFourTwo says. What is the current state of affairs between Manchester City and Kobbie Mainoo? Let’s examine this.

What’s the story?

Well, this would be a remarkable switch.

Mainoo is arguably the greatest prospect at Old Trafford right now, and the Red Devils have seriously high hopes for the 18-year-old.

Now – however – Manchester City could pinch the teenage wonderkid.

FourFourTwo believe Manchester City are chasing Mainoo as the treble winners look to continue churning gems out of the City Football Academy, after developing the likes of Phil Foden, Romeo Lavia and Cole Palmer into highly effective Premier League players.

It remains to be seen just how much Manchester City would be willing to spend on the England Under-19 international, but FourFourTwo interestingly note that the Citizens have a firm commitment to developing potential superstars, whereas Manchester United are struggling financially.

Who is Manchester City target Kobbie Mainoo?

Mainoo is yet to feature for Manchester United this season after suffering a serious injury during pre-season, so many outside of Old Trafford won’t know much about him.

Therefore, a comparison to a more famous figure could help, and the Stockport-born wonderkid has been likened to one of the most talented midfielders of his generation, Paul Pogba.

It was Anthony Elanga – who left Manchester United for Nottingham Forest back in July – who compared Mainoo to the France international.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the Sweden international said: “Kobbie Mainoo. He is one of my close guys that I still speak to at United and I believe he is next, the top one. His talent is unreal.

“When I played with him in the academy I always thought he had similar attributes to Paul Pogba. They are not the same player but just the way he moves and they can both do everything, defensive, offensive, he has a mixture of everything and is really good on and off the ball.”

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as it would be a truly dramatic moment if Mainoo swapped Old Trafford for the Etihad Stadium.
